It's the bizarre little incidents which make it so interesting to live in different countries. Today I was coming back from Udong in the car and reached the middle of town. We were just passing the brand new Thai embassy - a huge, modern edifice which looks completely out of place and seems intended to shout "wealth" - when I noticed that the oncoming traffic had all stopped. At first it looked as if a couple of dozen crabs were milling around on the road, but as we drew closer I could see that they were, in fact, big hairy spiders like tarantulas. A motorbike was parked nearby and a man was gingerly walking amongst them dropping them into his bucket. I guess he had had a small accident and spilled them on the road. It looked like a scene from a Mr Bean sketch, but Mony assured me that these spiders are something of a delicacy - first they are barbecued and then soaked in wine for a few months. After that the wine is drunk and apparently it makes you strong.... pass the Beaujolais please.
