Sunday morning - I'm off to see Phalin, my student who lives next door to the factory. I never have to go far down the path before I am spotted by a neighbour and Phalin comes running out of her house to greet me, with mum following close behind. I wonder what she's up to now that her exams are over and it's school holidays. My guess is that like most other students, she helps around the house - her mum cooks for the family and their twenty lodgers, whilst grandma goes to market to buy fresh meat and vegetables. This morning grandma was at the pagoda; she greeted me affectionately when she came back. A big festival is coming up soon which will go on for 15 days and the family has invited me to go along one Sunday. Devotees will be giving food to the pagodas for the ghosts (their ancestors!) - I joke that the monks will get very fat! As I left the yard I said goodbye to Phalin's cousin. At 9.30 a.m. she has already started preparing lunch for her family of four. I'd better rush home to do my washing too...
