After spending six days each week travelling to the schools we are quite happy to take it easy and relax "at home" on Sundays. A couple of weeks ago I was out walking nearby when a few students from the local teaching college called me over and invited me in for a chat. Since then I have been back several times and today took Ming round to be introduced. These students are very young and all come from the provinces; most of their parents are simple farmers. They get two years of free training and then have to return to the provinces to teach. They are very poor and just paying for their food is a burden on their families. Facilities are very basic and about twenty people live in each dormitory room. The holes in the roof don't bode well for the rainy season. But we have been struck by how young and enthusiastic they are, how friendly and open, in contrast to the university students at the English club who (generally) seem much more reserved. And their English is surprisingly good considering that it is not their major subject. Already I have started playing badminton with them and I am sure we will be frequent visitors at the weekends. We're the first and only foreigners they have met... |
