One of the schools we chose for Phase 2 is Udong High, a secondary school out on Route No 5. Although none of the directors speak English, we were impressed by their measured enthusiasm when we first dropped in (out of the blue) to see if they were interested in joining the project. We had to push hard to get them accepted by the sponsor, but so far our choice has been justified. The school worked very hard to get the computer room ready on time and the directors were in there with their sleeves rolled up helping out. So, three times a week, one of us makes the long trip out through beautiful scenery, past the pagodas, the mosques, the fish farms, the hay stacks and the stilt houses, to be warmly greeted by enthusiastic students and teachers. Ming has set up a little book-lending club to help the students improve their English (which is already surprisingly good) and it's the only one of our schools where the students fight each other to answer questions! It's a shame that we will not have longer with them, but we're confident that the school will come through okay.
