We got back from a three-day trip to Thailand yesterday. Yep, I know we've only just arrived in Cambodia so it seems early for a holiday, but we needed to get work visas and it couldn't be done without leaving the country (visas are a big problem for overseas volunteers as there is no such category on the application form, so most end up on tourist visas). It's a bit of a shock arriving in Bangkok, it seems so built up and modern after Phnom Penh. The buildings are much taller, the streets are busier and they're full of cars rather than motorbikes. The pace is faster too, and people just a shade less friendly - too many foreign faces I guess. We stayed in a nice modern guest house close to the river, revelling in the relative cheapness of everything - wonderful meals for a dollar or two, fifty cent entry fees for the temples and free clean toilets. I wouldn't fancy staying there long term, but It's easy to understand the draw of Thailand for impoverished backpackers. Yeah, well I haven't mentioned the dope or the prostitutes and I hope you won't either... |
