Yesterday we attended a party at Preak Eng to mark the end of the basic course and to hand out certificates. It was to have been a modest affair, but the teachers decided to really party and took all the arrangements in hand themselves. When we arrived there were banners hanging outside the hall welcoming the guests; adorning the blackboard inside was writing in praise of the donors and sponsors - and even the trainers. The hall was decorated and chairs were set ready for the graduation ceremony. Mr Lim and Mr Sorn Chan arrived and were visibly impressed by the welcome. The speeches and presentations were dispatched fairly quickly and then the guests were taken for a tour of the computer room while the hall was readied for dinner: salad, curry, French sticks, small roast birds and plenty of beer and coke. After eating, the tables were moved aside and then the dancing started, our own attempts at this traditional Khmer art form being greeted by looks of amazement and howls of appreciation. For once, I'm hoping the photographs don't come out...
