Epilogue

I am writing this from the comfort of our rented apartment in Hong Kong. Already Cambodia seems a long way off and we have slipped all too easily into the comfortable existence enjoyed by people in the developed world. The transport is fast and efficient, the shops have a dozen varieties of everything (even toilet paper) and the electricity never goes off. All you need is money. After two days here I realised what else is different - we hardly ever see anybody smile, at least, not to strangers. Sure, the economy is in the doldrums, but does being miserable to everyone help? Still, we are here to rest up and buy a new computer so we won't let it bother us. And we have already enjoyed meeting up with several old friends, of which there are many from our years spent working here. The beach is just five minutes away and the mountains are right behind us. It's not so bad here (for now) after all...
